From the General Preferences window in the Preferences submenu in the Edit menu, you can modify the following settings:
• Require Password
When Require Password is enabled, Idea Keeper requires that the user enter a password when starting up. For this feature to work, you need to check the Require Password box and enter a password (which is case sensitive) via the Set Password button. Note, this is not currently a high security feature. A future version of Idea Keeper will (1) require passwords separately for individual Topics, and (2) encrypt the ideas so they cannot be recovered without a password.
• Use Hot Key
When Use Hot Key is enabled, Idea Keeper will automatically become the active application when the user defined keyboard combination is pressed. For this feature to work, you need to check the Use Hot Key box and define a hot key combination via the Set Launch Hot Key button.
• When In Background...
Idea Keeper has three different modes for hiding/showing its windows while in the background.
(1) When the Show Icon Window option is enabled, Idea Keeper will hide all idea windows and the Organizer window when in the background and display a small window with the Idea Keeper icon. You can change the location of this background, icon window via the "Background Window" item in the Preferences submenu in the Edit menu.
Even when this option is enabled and Idea Keeper is in the background, you can use drag and drop to import any text file into any Topic you wish by simply dragging the file over the background window - this will automatically make the Organizer Window visible.
(2) When the Don't Hide Windows option is enabled, Idea Keeper won't hide any windows.
(3) When the Hide All Windows optin is enabled, all the idea windows and the Organizer Window are hidden and no icon window is displayed.
• Date and Time Formats
These settings determine the format of the date and time when they are inserted into an idea window (see Objects in Ideas).
• Miscellaneous Settings
• When Auto Save is enabled, Idea Keeper saves the current Topic each time you move Idea Keeper to the background.
• When Show Scrollbars in Idea Windows is enabled, normal scrollbars and the grow-box are displayed in idea windows. When this option is not enabled, a thin border is drawn on the right and bottom of the idea windows. You can resize idea windows by clicking and dragging in this thin border. Information about changing other window settings is described in (<- Double-click here!).
• When Auto Size Ideas When Typing is enabled, the height of idea windows is increased to accomodate increases in the amount of text in the active idea window.
• When Global Organizer Window is enabled, the size, location, and visibility of the Organizer Window is remembered when switching from one Topic to another. When this option is not enabled, the size, location, and visibility of the Organizer Window is remembered separately for each Topic.
• When Auto Name New Ideas is enabled, Idea Keeper automatically names new ideas as "Idea #n", where n is the number of ideas in the current Topic. This option allows you to create a new ideas and immediately start typing in the idea. For more information on renaming ideas see .
• When Add Idea to New Topics is enabled, Idea Keeper automatically adds an idea to newly created Topics. If this option is not enabled, newly created Topics contain no ideas. For more information on renaming Topics see .
• When Move Insertion with Page Up/Down is enabled, Idea Keeper moves the insertion bar within the text of an idea window when the page up, page down, home, or end key is pressed. If this option is not enabled, then these keys scroll the text within an idea window without affecting the insertion bar (or selection of text). For more information about other Hot Keys see .
• The Creater of Exported TEXT Files is the four letter code (called "creator") given to all ideas exported as Text files from Idea Keeper. For more about exporting ideas see .
• When Use Intelligent Cut and Paste is enabled, Idea Keeper uses “intelligent cut and paste” rules to remove and/or add extra blank characters according to the context when you delete, insert, paste, copy, cut or receive text via a drag. For example, when this flag is set, you can change the following text:
Returns are only accepted if the merchandise is damaged.
to this:
Returns are accepted only if the merchandise is damaged.
by double-clicking the word “only” (thus selecting four characters and no spaces) and dragging it after the word “accepted” or before the word “if”. Without intelligent cut and paste, the result would look like this:
Returns are acceptedonly if the merchandise is damaged.
which would make drag and drop editing less useful.
